Having come from Puerto Rico to New York at an early age, I lost my opportunity to learn my culture first hand. In school, I was never taught my history or the contributions of Puerto Ricans to society. The only times that we read about Puerto Ricans were when we had to study the screenplay of West Side Story as compared to Romeo and Juliet. Aside from that, the "ghetto" books that were so popular when I was a teenager were my only exposure to Puerto Ricans in literature.

The older I get, the more I thirst for knowledge of my country and people. My desire is to be able to give people an opportunity to get to know Puerto Rican and Latino culture and share the wonderful gifts that they have brought to the world.
